Milarepa on Mount Kailash

Painting of a famous Tibetan singer, Milarepa whose name means "Cotton-clad" shown sitting on Mt Kailash which is considered very sacred for Hindus as well as Buddhists. Painted on a 45.5 x 30 cm cloth using pigments and gold color dates back to the 14th Century. This particular painting is known as "Thangka" which means painted on a cloth which can be rolled for portability. The lake Mansarovar is shown flowing in wavy blue and green bands. Milarepa is surrounded by his disciples, and his teacher, Marpa, is shown in a medal-lion above him. The peaks of snow covered Mt Kailash is shown behind them, and below the peaks are the mountains through which the sun rays reaches Milarepa. The "Thangka" is surrounded by the five sisters of long life ride their mounts who accompany Milarepa wherever he preaches.
