Ewer (Suichu) - 1958.336_print

"Ewer (Suichu)," is a piece not currently on view at the Cleveland Museum of Art originating from Japan during the Momoyama period (1573-1615 CE). This ewer is made of glazed earthen stoneware with iron oxide underglaze slip (Mino ware, Oribe type). According to the museum, this ewer is a type of Oribe tea ware, named after the tea master Furuta Oribe known for his characteristically flamboyant and abstract designs. On mouth the piece the diameter is: 12.7 cm (5 in.); and the container: 21 cm (8 1/4 in.) with designs of cascading ivy, strips, grids, pine trees, and a glaze alternating between green and transparent.
