Buddha Calling the Earth to Witness - 1965.27_print

"Buddha Calling the Earth to Witness" is a piece not currently on view at the Cleveland Musuem of Art originating from Northern India, in the Bihar region during the 11th-12th century. This sculpture is crafted from stone with the dimensions of 8.2 x 6.1 cm (3 1/4 x 2 3/8 in.). The images depict the historical Buddha in the center, reaching enlightenment under the Bodhi tree while gesturing the earth to witness, and depictions of key events from his life story. According to the museum, the small size of the sculpture and the prayer inscribed on the backside in the Newari language indicate this object would have likely been used in a pilgrimage to sacred sites. This piece was a purchase from the Andrew R. and Martha Holden Jennings Fund 1965.27. The image is in the Public Domain and can be seen on the museum's website: www.clevelandart.org/art/1965.27
