Palanquin Hook - 1982.12_print
"Palanquin Hook" is piece not currently on view at the Cleveland Museum of Art originating from Cambodia during the 12-13th century. Made in the Banyon style, with the deimensions of 17.4 cm (6 7/8 in.); this ornate bronze hook would have once supported a bronze ring which attached to a seat, as part of a larger palanquin, used to carry important members of the royal family or priesthood during public festivals. The hook is decorated with detailed symbolism which includes a garuda, or man-eagle, which represents success and devotion, and a sword-bearing dancer depicting a historical scene.
