Ancestor Figure - 1978.412.728
The Ancestor Figure originates from Papua New Guinea region and was created by the Kopar people. Its entire composition is simply wood and paint. However as simple as the piece's materials are; the same can not be said for the design of the artwork. The figure depicts a standing man with a large headdress covered in jewels. There seems to be some form of animal standing beneath the man which gives the impression that he is riding a steed of some sort. There are many notes of symmetry and geometric design implemented in this piece with a great amount of detail carved into the headdress.
