Funerary Portrait of Young Girl

This piece is from Egypt in the Roman Empire, around the Late Tiberian period. It is an encaustic painting on wood; encaustic meaning that the pigments were mixed with beeswax prior to application. The dimensions of this piece are 39.4 x 17.4 cm. This tradition of painting these pieces continued into the Roman Empire and it was sometimes painted onto the linen shrouds of the mummy. The careful rendering of hair, clothing, and jewelry is significant because it shows care from the artist and the importance of the person. According to the website, adding gold or “gilded” details on the lips and jewelry is a rare detail that alludes to the person’s transformation in death in a blessed spirit, or an “akh”.
