Virupa_web

Virupa was created in China in the 1400’s during the Ming Dynasty. This artwork was made out of gilt bronze and the dimensions are 43.6 cm (17 3/16 in.). This piece of art caught my eye because of the way that Virupa is pointing up. According to the museum his posture references his ability to stop the sun: as an enlightened being, he can control phenomena of nature. Virupa was a gift to the Cleveland Museum of Art by Mary B. Lee, C. Bingham Blossom, Dudley S. Blossom III, Laurel B. Kovacik, and Elizabeth B. Blossom, in memory of Elizabeth B. Blossom. It can be found in the Himalayan section 237.
