The Rolex Yacht Master is a watch that has always been destined to have an uncertain lot in life if you listen to the rumor mill. It was supposedly created as a sleeker, sexier upgrade to the Submariner, Rolex’s sturdy and beloved diver. But the design overhaul would have been drastic, and Rolex supposedly scrapped plans to replace the well-established dive watch at the last minute with a legion of Submariner devotees poised to pounce, and instead released the Yacht-Master as an entirely new model. The watch struggled to find its place in the Rolex line-up because of this. Because of its utilitarian nature, people loved (and still love) the Submariner; it was a practical tool for the modern navigator. This Rolex masterpiece instead concentrated on luxury boating, using precious metals in the construction of the case of the watch, as the name might suggest, for the Yacht-Master. It was still a solid timepiece with a triple lock crown and a water resistance of up to 100 m, but its emphasis on luxury living placed it somewhere between the Submariner’s practicality and the Day-dressiness Date’s in horological limbo.
