Tomb Guardians
These Tomb Guardians are said to be from Shaanxi, Xi'an during the Tang Dynasty (early 700s). The guardians are called "earth spirits" and they are put in the entrance of tombs to keep the soul in the tomb as well as protecting it from any "evil", using its wild appearance to put fear into others. One of the sculptures is 92.3 x 43.8 x 41.9 cm while the other one is slightly smaller at 88.9 x 41 x 50.8 cm. This artwork was a gift of various donors and can be found at the Cleveland Museum of Art in 239 Chinese Ceramics and Metalwork. This image is in the public domain.
