"Plaque from a Portable Altar Showing the Crucifixion" is part of a small portable altar dating from 1050-1100. Crafted from walrus ivory, this panel would have originally decorated one of the sides of the box containing the altar. Recovered from the Lower Rhine Valley in Germany, this Romanesque period piece depicts the Crucifixion of Christ and overall sits 5.1 x 9.6 cm (2 x 3 3/4 in.). A gift to The Cleveland Museum of Art, from Arnold Seligmann, Rey and Company, Inc. in 1922. clevelandart.org/art/1922.359
