Prayer Niche (Mihrab) - 1962.23_print

"Prayer Niche (Mihrab)" on view at The Cleveland Museum of Art in Gallery 116, is a beautiful and impressive work of ceramic mosaic from Iran, Isfahan in the style of the Safavid period. The origin of this mihrab is still under investigation - according to the museum, the style of the work and the calligraphy gives the impression this mihrab dates to the 1500s, however the tile work has been dated and determined to be much more modern, made sometime between 1941 and 1961, although further examination is still being undertaken. This piece would've been the focal point of the mosque meant to signify paradise, and would typically be situated on the wall of the mosque or the "qibla" facing towards Mecca.

The dimensions are - 290.7 x 245.3 cm (114 7/16 x 96 9/16 in.); frieze: 69.2 x 1563.5 cm (27 1/4 x 615 9/16 in.).

The mihrab was a gift of Katharine Holden Thayer 1962.23.

The image is in the Public Domain and can be seen on the museum's website.
