Bloodstone Cameo with Saint George - 1959.41_print

"Bloodstone Cameo with Saint George," on view at The Cleveland Museum of Art in Gallery 105, is a small, engraved cameo of brave Saint George, the dragon slayer, made of dark charcoal-colored and red speckled bloodstone. It dates to 1000-1100 and is from Constantinople. According to the museum, this cameo would've been used as a devotional and protective device and likely would've been worn around a person's neck, as close proximity to a sacred image was believed to enhance its powers. In addition to the power that comes from the image itself, bloodstone as a material was believed to have magic medicinal properties such as the ability to stop hemorrhages and increase blood circulation.

The cameo is 3.2 x 2.8 x 1.4 cm (1 1/4 x 1 1/8 x 9/16 in.).

It was purchased by the Dudley P. Allen Fund 1959.41.

The image is in the Public Domain and can be seen on the museum's website.
