"Jonah Swallowed," on view at The Cleveland Museum of Art in Gallery 104, is an impressively detailed marble carved sculpture dated to AD 280-90. It is classified as being of the Late Roman, Asia Minor, early Christian period of the 3rd century. According to the museum, it depicts a popular Old Testament prophet, Jonah, being swallowed by a sea monster or a "cetus," whereas in modern times we are more familiar with Jonah being swallowed by a whale. This story is an example of prefiguration, where the stories of the Old Testament foreshadow similar events in the New Testament.
The sculpture is 50.4 x 15.5 x 26.9 cm (19 13/16 x 6 1/8 x 10 9/16 in.) in size.
It was purchased with the John L. Severance Fund 1965.237.
