Woman and Water Buffalo Rhyton -1964.96_print

"Woman and Water Buffalo Rhyton," on view at the Cleveland Museum of Art in Gallery 102A, is a beautifully and intricately engraved, gilded, and inlaid piece of silver metalwork which serves an utilitarian purpose as a drinking horn. This piece is from either Sasanian, Iran, 600s or the Turk Shahi dynasty in Kabul, Afghanistan in 500s. Made from silver with skilled craftsmanship such as mercury gilding and glass inlays, the subject is a hybrid of a woman's head and that of a water buffalo. The overall dimensions of the piece are 19.1 cm (7.5 in) and it weighs 702 g (1.55 lbs). The piece was purchased from the Leonard C. Hanna, Jr. Fund 1964.476. The image is in the Public Domain and can be seen on the museum's website.
