Wolf-Head Barge Fixture - 1985.51_web

This bronze wolf is from 1st-2nd century Italy, Rome. The head is 21.9 x 16.8 centimeters (8 5/8 x 6 5/8 inches). The Cleveland Museum states that it is part of the Leonard C. Hanna, Jr. Fund with the accession number 1985.51, and is on display at 103 Roman. Wolf heads like this one, the Cleveland Museum includes, were used on "a luxurious pleasure barge moored on Lake Nemi, near Rome." The wolf is an important symbol of Rome, having been involved with the mythical founders Romulus and Remus. This bronze head is in the public domain.
