Tigress and Cubs - 1987.65_web

A tesserae of "Tigress and Cubs" from 4th century Eastern Roman Empire (Italy, Roman). With dimensions of 142.9 x 135.4 centimeters (56 1/4 x 53 5/16 inches), this mosaic can be found at the Cleveland Museum of Art at 103 Roman. The piece was a gift of the John L. Severance Fund with the accession number 1987.65. According to the Cleveland Museum, these works were featured in houses and villas of the Roman elite, more than 10,000 tiles are used here, and multiple colors are used to show the striped marks on the mother and her cubs. It appears the mother is pretending to be hurt to encourage her cubs. (it is a method felines use as their cubs grow older) This tesserae is in the public domain.
