Uzume no Mikoto Dancing Beside a Fire (From the Series The Spring Cave) - 1940.990.3_print

"Uzume no Mikoto Dancing Beside a Fire (From the Series The Spring Cave)", is a beautiful color woodblock print. According to the museum, it is inspired by the legend of the Shinto Supreme Sun Goddess, Amaterasu. So offended by her brother, Amaterasu retreated into a cave, leaving the Earth in total darkness. Attempts to lure her out with goddess dancing, cock crowing, and music-making all failed. Until a mirror was hung from a nearby tree, and it finally drew Amaterasu out. As soon as she was out, a stone was placed at the caves entrance, blocking her from going back in, and light returned to the world. Its dimensions are 18.8 x 21 cm (7 3/8 x 8 1/4 in.) and is currently not available for view. This piece was a bequest of James Parmelee 1940.990.3. The image is in the Public Domain and can be seen on the museum's website.
