Sutra Container - 1998.121_print

"Sutra Container", on view at the Cleveland Museum of Art, is a divine piece made of gilt bronze with incised and high relief decoration. According to the museum, this was used to preserve a miniature Buddhist sacred text. This portable container was created by hammering the reverse relief designs on both the front and the back of the case. Two young boys can be seen holding giant lotus flowers while a pair of mandarin ducks swim in a peaceful pond. The playful boys are thought to represent newly born souls in the Pure Land, which is described in the popular Buddhist scripture known as the Lotus Sutra. Its dimensions are 10.2 x 6.5 x 1.5 cm (4 x 29/16 x 9/16 in.) and can be found in Gallery 236 Korean. This piece was a gift of Mitsuru Tajima 1998.121. The image is in the Public Domain and can be seen on the museum's website.
