Head of Buddha - 1963.504_print

"Head of Buddha," on view at the Cleveland Museum of Art in Gallery 243, is a carefully sculpted and beautifully detailed sandstone bust from Northern India, Mathura, Gupta Period. During the 5th century, sculptors of Mathura achieved the balance between idealized linear features and fleshy volumes. The brows arch with tension and alertness, despite the lids being half closed. The hair is rendered into short curls, which marks one who has reached enlightenment. The overall dimensions of the bust are 30.6 x 16.6 cm. The sculpture was a purchase from the John L. Severance Fund 1963.504. The image is in the Public Domain and can be seen on the museum's website.
