Demon in chains 1982.63

“Demon in chains” is a page that according to the Cleveland Museum of Art belonged to early Ottoman sultans. Its overall dimensions are 27 x 35.2 cm (10 5/8 x 13 7/8 in.); image: 25.7 x 34.4 cm (10 1/8 x 13 9/16 in.). The page is from Iran or Central Asia, Timurid or Turkoman Period, dated ca. 1453. It is opaque watercolor and gold on paper. As CMA states the page depicts two people leading the enchained demon, or Persian div, between them. Sometimes Divs in Persian folktales are captured to force them to use their magic for serving kings. It was purchased from the J. H. Wade Fund; currently not on a view. The image is in the public domain. Accession number is 1982.63.
