Nenfro statue of a winged lion 60.11.1
The statue of a winged lion is dated ca. 550 B.C. It belongs to the Archaic period of Etruscan art. Overall dimensions are H. 37 1/2 in. (95.3 cm); length 28 3/4 in. (73 cm); width at haunches 13 3/4 in. (35 cm). As the Metropolitan Museum of Art states, the statue is made of a volcanic stone called nenfro, which is being widely used at Vulci. According to the museum it was protecting the entrance to the tomb. The art piece was acquired through the Rogers Fund in 1960. It can be seen in Met’s gallery 170. Accession number is 60.11.1.
