Shinto Deities 神像-1978.3_print

This sculpture is known as “Shinto Deities 神像”, it is made from wood with traces of polychromy. This sculpture was found in the 900s within Japan, Heian period (794-1185). The overall dimensions of this sculpture are 50.3x38.1 cm (19 13/16 x 15 in.). The sculptures were purchased from the Leonard C. Hanna, Jr. Fund 1978.3. The sculpture is not on view in Cleveland Museum of Art. The sculptures represent Kami (the name for the god or goddess associated with Shinto, the Japanese religious tradition) and they have been originally built for the Usa Hachiman shrine in Oita on the island of Kyshu.
