Willow and Moon Kannon- 1985.110_web

Willow and Moon Kannon by Gakuō Zōkyū is from 1500 in the Murumachi period from the Cleveland Museum of Art. It is a hanging scroll of ink on paper and hangs 201 x 67.9cm. According to the museums website, this painting depicts Kannon, a bodhisattva of mercy and compassion, looking at the moons reflection in the water. Kannon has the traditional markings of a bodhisattva with their urna and elongated earlobes.The description also states that the moon is a symbol of impermanence and the willow branch and water vase in their hands represent healing and purification.

This image is not on display at the Cleveland Museum of Art. This piece was purchased with the John L, Severance Fund. This image is in the public domain.
