Portrait of the Great Master Yeongwoldang Eugjin- 1990.16_web

Portrait of the Great Master Yeongwoldang Eungjin from 1700s Korea, Joseon Dynasty. This piece is a hanging scroll of colored ink and gold on silk. It is 216.9 x 103.3 cm and was purchased by the Cleveland Museum of Art using the Mr. and Mrs. William H. Marlatt fund. My eyes were drawn to the striking green color of the monastic robes, which is accompanied by other red and blue decorative elements. According to the museums website, the nature of his robes, a dragon headed fly whisk, and Buddhist scriptures indicate that he is of elevated status. Yeongwoldang Eungjin with an elevated status. The museums description also states that the writing utensils on his desk illustrate his deeper insight into Buddhist teaching. Taking another look at his dragon headed fly whisk, viewers can see the white sheerness, which is depicted in immaculate detail as one can see a trail of beads behind the sheerness.

This piece is currently not on display. This image is in the public domain.
