Shakyamuni as an Ascetic -1966.116_web

This piece is Shakyamuni as an Ascetic from the Yuan dynasty in the early 1300s and is gilt bronze with polychromy. It is 44.2 x 31.8 cm and was purchased by the Cleveland Museum of Art using the J. H. Wade fund. This piece shows the historic Buddha Shakyamuni, recognizable by his urna, tuft of hair, and elongated earlobes. According to the museums website, Shakyamuni is in a state of contemplation and his posture represents his withdrawal from the world to achieve self- realization. The eyes glide from Shakyamuni's pleasant, warm face and over the bronze folds and decorative edge of his robes.
