Siddhartha at the Bodhi Tree- 1997.151_web

Siddhartha at the Bodhi Tree is from the 100s-200s and was found in Gandhara, Pakistan. It is 73.7 x 57.2 cm and is made of schist. It is carved in fairly high relief as seen by the protruding figures of Buddha and the villagers. According to the museum, the piece shows Buddha (as noted by his monastic robes and urna) under the Bodhi tree he reached enlightenment underneath; he sees an altar to worship a nature divinity, and she comes out of the ground and worships Buddha. This piece can be seen in 242A Ancient India at the Cleveland Museum of Art. This image is public domain.
