Fragment of a Processional Cross – 1970.36_web

The “Fragment of a Processional Cross” displayed in the Cleveland Museum of Art in Gallery 105 is an elaborately decorated silver and gold religious item dating to the

Byzantium, Constantinople, Byzantine period, 11th century. The cross covered with gorgeous swirly designs, tiny patterns of geometrical shapes, and images of significant individuals. According to the museum, the image in the center depicts Christ while the others show the Virgin Mary and Saint John the Baptist. The back of the cross has the image of Saint Sabas and other saints. The dimensions of the piece are: 32.3 x 44.8 x 5.7 cm (12 11/16 x 17 5/8 x 2 1/4 in.). The cross is credited to the Leonard C. Hannah, Jr. Fund 1970.36.
