Funerary Portrait of a Woman – 1971.136_web
“Funerary Portrait of a Woman,” on view at the Cleveland Museum of Art in Gallery 107, is a stunning encaustic painting from Antonine, Egypt. Dating to the Roman Empire, c. 138-192, the “mummy portrait” was painted on a 26 x 19 cm (10 1/4 x 7 1/2 in.) linen. The large eyes of the woman depict a great deal of sadness. The artist used correct shadow placement to give the subject a 3D appearance. According to the museum, the painting was created to cover the woman’s mummy once she begins her journey to the afterlife. The portrait is credited to the John L. Severance Fund 1971.136. The image is in the Public Domain and can be viewed on the museum’s website.
