Plaque from a Reliquary Shrine_1957.502_web

A gorgeous plaque depicting abstract florals and geometrics that were used for a reliquary shrine in the Cologne Cathedral, Germany. It is part of a set dated to c. 1170. The florals are in blue, green and white on a yellow background and are reminiscent of Islamic art.

 

It is on view in Gallery 106C Medieval Treasury in the Cleveland Museum of Art. Its overall size is 2.7 x 6.1 cm (1 1/16 x 2 3/8 in.). It was a gift of Rosamond Zverina 1957.502.
