Virgin Nursing the Christ Child_1984.157_web

The Virgin Nursing the Christ Child from Île de France, France dated to c. 1370 is a touching humanisation of the Holy Mary and the baby Christ. Her facial expression on the exquisitely carved and painted limestone statue is one of love but also exhaustion, a feeling all mothers know. According the museum, the statue is a great example of the more emotional depiction of religious imagery is typical for the time period and is considered a reaction to the horrors of the first plague in 1348.
