Madonna and Child_1972.51_web

A beautiful depiction of Madonna and Child, attributed to Andrea Pisano from Florence, Italy and dated c. 1330-1340. The Madonna has a full body and the typical posture of a mother holding her child. While the marble is white nowadays, it bears traces of gilding, according to the museum.

 

It is on view in Gallery 110A Italian Gothic in the Cleveland Museum of Art. Its overall size with base is 5 x 15.9 x 15.1 cm (1 15/16 x 6 1/4 x 5 15/16 in.); without base it is 32.7 x 15 x 9.6 cm (12 7/8 x 5 7/8 x 3 3/4 in.). It was a purchase from the Leonard C. Hanna, Jr. Fund 1972.51.
