Black-Figure Dinos_1971.46_web
A Black-Figure Dinos from c. 520-515 BC which served as a mixing vessel for wine for use during a symposium (drinking party) with a wide mouth for better access to the liquid. It is attributed to the Circle of Antimenes Painter who was active in Attic, Greece from c. 530-510 BC. On the top of its rim it shows images of Heroic Scenes, whereas on the inside rim warships are detailed. It is a beautiful example of a drinking vessel with its black round body only offset by the red colored rim and the black drawings. According to the museum, the vessel is unable to stand on its own, making a separate base likely.
The Cleveland Museum of Art received it from the John L. Severance Fund 1971.46.
The image is in the public domain and can be viewed on the museum's website here www.clevelandart.org/art/1971.46
