The "Coffin of Bakenmut," on view at the Cleveland Museum of Art in Gallery 107 "Egyptian" is one of the finest examples of craftsmanship of painted wooden coffins from Third Intermediate Period, late Dynasty 21 (1069-945 BC) to early Dynasty 22 (945-924 BC). It is dated to circa 1000 - 900 BC from Thebes, Egypt. The coffin is made of sycamore fig and painted and gessoed. It stands at 208 x 68 cm (81 7/8 x 26 3/4 in.) and is covered in depictions of religious scenes, images of gods and goddesses, magical symbols and spells. The lavish decor shows the importance of Bakenmut who was very likely a high priest of Amen from Thebes.
The coffin is part of a set. It was gifted to The Cleveland Museum of Art by the John Huntington Art and Polytechnic Trust 1914.561
