Shark Reliquary DP-15497-019
The Shark Reliquary was made by an unknown Solomon Islands artist around the 1900s. The shark is made out of wood, shell, pigment, and human skull. It measures 10 ¾” high, has a depth of 9” and is 67” long. The reason as to why the reliquary is hollow is because it houses a human skull. Personally I think it looks more like a marlin than a shark with its very pointed snout and fins. It is located at the Metropolitan Museum of Art and was a gift of Milly and Arne Glimcher, in honor of Thomas Campbell in 2017, its accession number is 2017.734a, b. Unfortunately it is not on display at the MET. This image is in the public domain and its URL is www.metmuseum.org/art/collection/search/762069
