African Jewelry (necklace) 1935.311

This is a gold pectoral disc sometimes called the soul disks, was made in the 19th century and are from the Akan, Akan-related, Asante and Baule peoples from the Guinea Coast in Ghana, Africa. The overall dimensions are 4.3 cm (1 11/16 in.). According to the museum, this 1800's piece of jewelry demonstrated the wealth and power that the chiefs and kings had during their rule. They were worn as a necklace over the chest using the fibers from pineapples. It currently resides in the Cleveland Museum of Art. Given by Dudley P.
