Rattle Staff (ukhuhre) 1998.85

This is a rattle staff, or ukhuhrẹ, from the Igbesanmwan, Benin Kingdom, Nigeria from the 1900's. According to the museum, they are used in celebrations. When the staff is banged on the ground, it makes a "rattling sound", since inside it is hollow, but has another piece made of wood inside which allows the staff to create that sound. The staff is made with wood, paint, cowrie shells, and plant fibers and the dimensions are 149.5 x 7.5 x 8 cm (58 7/8 x 2 15/16 x 3 1/8 in.). It currently resides in The Cleveland Museum of Art. Gifted by Phyllis Sloane in memory of Rose White, housed at 108A Sub-Saharan. The image is in the public domain. clevelandart.org/art/1998.85
