Provence romane: Sainte-Jalle

On the way back to Lyon at the end of my Provençal photo trip, I stopped for a lovely Romanesque church I had already admired and photographed some years ago in the village of Sainte-Jalle. This village is located in the département of Drôme, therefore technically not in Provence stricto sensu, but in the part of the Drôme which borders Provence, and is thus named Drôme provençale, which is why I include it under the general heading of Provence romane.

Dedicated to Notre-Dame de Beauvert, the church was built on what had been a large Roman building. Several elements from the Late Antiquity were re-used when erecting the church. It was originally the seat of a Cluniac priory, but none of the priory buildings remains today. It was listed as a Historic Landmark in 1926.

The tympanum is simple and naive, with a n notable roughness in the manner. Although it was a dependency of Cluny, this was but a very small priory, and there was not a lot of money to funnel into decoration. The archivolt was added later (probably around 1200) and is the work of a more proficient sculptor.
