Flowers and foliage with flash

In May 2020, as we were still in COVID lockdown, I had another go at overpowering the midday (or afternoon) Sun and lighting outdoor macro subjects with flash only.

The equipment was the same I had used previously: one of my Phottix Pro Mitros+ cobra flashes (connected to a Godox PB960 battery pack) on a Manfrotto Nano stand and triggered remotely by the Odin II flash controller on the handheld camera. The very short duration of the flash allowed me to freeze any movement of the subject due to the wind.

To obtain a soft light, I placed over the flash a Lastolite Ezybox 22 × 22–cm “Joe McNally” softbox with double diffuser —the best softbox I have ever found (and I’ve tried a few!) for cobra flashes. I had also done that for the previous series shot in April 2020, of which I uploaded a selection to Flickr but without mentioning that technical information that may be of interest to some “strobists”.
