Pendent 1987.1_web

"Pendent," is on view at the Cleveland Museum of Art in Gallery 107, it is a spectacular colorful ornament from Sudan, Napatan; lion's head component, Egypt, probably New Kingdom. Dating back to the Late Period, Dynasty 25. This delicately sculpted pendent was created from Amethyst and gold. The lion's head is an heirloom from the New Kingdom, most likely a gaming piece that had been adapted in the Napatan period to serve as an pendent amulet. It was fairly common to recycle precious stones in antiquity (Cleveland Museum of Art's website). The dimensions of this pendant are 3.5 x 2.9 x 2.7 cm (1 3/8 x 1 1/8 x 1 1/16 in.) overall. The pendant was a purchase from the J.H. Wade Fund 1987.1. The image is in the public domain and can be seen on the museum's website.
