Head of Buddha c. 570 web
This Head of Buddha is made out of Limestone in circa 570 by an unknown artist in the domain of China, Hebei province, northern Xiangtangshan caves, South cave, and Northern Qi dynasty. It measures 62.2 x 54.6 cm (24 1/2 x 21 1/2 in.) overall. This piece is currently in the Cleveland Museum of Art (Gift of C. T. Loo 1923.97) and currently on view at the 241C Chinese Buddhist Sculptures. I love this piece of art because of its intriguing facial features. This Buddha head has wide set eyes, a broader nose and more pronounced lips from every other one have seen. It also has a dot in the middle of its forehead which seems like a third eye. According to the Cleveland Museum of Art, “The Buddha’s smile offers reassurance and consolation.” This image is in the public domain
