Guinea Coast, Nigeria, Yoruba, 20th century 1998.278_web
This Coronet (oríkògbófo) was made in the 1900s in the Guinea Coast of Nigeria- probably by an artist who was a member of the Yoruba people. The Coronet (oríkògbófo) measures 19 x 19 x 18 cm (7 1/2 x 7 1/2 x 7 1/16 in.) overall. This collection is in the Cleveland Museum Art (Gift of Drs. James, Gladys, Jay, Jeffrey, and Jamie Strain 1998.278), but is not currently on view in the museum. According to Cleveland Museum of Art, “the coronet (oríkògbófo) may only be worn by a king descended from Oduduwa, the first king of the Yoruba.” it is made out of cloths, glass beads and threads. This colorful cylindrical shape of the coronet has different beading patterns to it. There is a repeating yellow, gold, and blue pattern with a red center resembling a flower at the top of the coronet with a tassel exiting from the center while having a heart and flower pattern around its circumference. At the bottom of the tassel is a green fringe hanging from a gold conical shape. This image is in the public domain www.clevelandart.org/art/1998.278
