Cast of Trajan's Column Scene CXLV
The final pursuit and suicide of Decebalus: Roman cavalry pursue Decebalus. The Dacian leader kneels in the center of the scene. Now trapped, he cuts his throat to escape a certain fate of being brought to Rome in chains only to be humiliated and killed. A Roman, Ti. Claudius Maximus (whose tomb has been found in Greece at Philippi), stretches out his arm to apprehend Decebalus, but does not reach the king in time. Decebalus is here a sympathetic figure, surrounded on all sides by Roman soldiers, and in defiance of them all taking his own life.
