Books and Scholars’ Accouterments 책가도 (冊架圖) - 2011.37_print
This painting on a ten-panel folding screen was made by the artist Yi Taek-gyun sometime in Korea during the late 1800s, the period of the Joseon dynasty. According to the videos posted by the museum, the various objects would represent ideas, such as prosperity and longevity, relevant to the owner of this panel. In some ways, this may have been a way of self-representation much like a portrait, except without depiction of the body at all. There is also mention of a hidden seal on the third panel from the right which reveals the identity of the artist, but I was not able to find it while zooming in. The material of the panel is silk, and its overall size is 197.5 x 395 cm (77 3/4 x 155 1/2 in.). This panel painting is in the collection of the Cleveland Museum of Art (Gift from the Leonard C. Hanna, Jr. Fund) and is currently not available for view. This image is in the public domain.
