Plate with a Scene of Revelry - 1972.71_print
This silver alloy plate from Northwestern India was made during the Gupta period (320-647) sometime during the 400s. It has a diameter of 18.7 cm (7 3/8 in.) and although the metalwork is simple, the figures depicted are all in a stance of motion that implies activity. According to the label, the crowded composition is harmoniously balanced by the two tiers of figures, and I find that idea reinforced by the centrality created by the attention given towards the figures at the center. This plate is in the collection of the Cleveland Museum or Art (purchased from the J. H. Wade Fund 1972.71) and is currently on display in gallery 242A Ancient India. The image is in the public domain.
