I Need to Play a Role, but I Need to Be Myself
There was a dream and one day I could see it /
Like a bird in a cage I broke in and demanded that somebody free it /
And there was a kid with a head full of doubt /
So I’ll scream 'til I die and the last of those bad thoughts are finally out
--Avett Brothers, "Head Full of Doubt, Road Full of Promise"
I'd never heard this song before. It came on the radio at a particularly opportune time, and it hit me pretty hard -- mostly in a good way.
Sometimes we think we're past things when we're brought face to face that the journey is a lot longer than we thought. But it's important to remember that we've still taken some of those steps to get there.
