Liberty 🇳🇪
The Liberty bridge (Szabadság HÃd) spans the river Danube connecting the Buda and Pest parts of the city. Originally named the Franz Joseph bridge (1896) it was renamed the Liberty or Freedom bridge in 1945 after liberation from the Nazis. The word "liberty" is open to interpretation and Hungary was freed again this time from communism in 1989 in a peaceful revolution after the fall of the Berlin Wall. The 1956 Hungarian Revolution had been brutally repressed when Russian tanks and troops rolled into Budapest on 07 November 1956.
The banks of the river Danube between Liberty bridge and Margaret bridge are a designated UNESCO World Heritage Site
