Hidden treasure π¬π§
The Despenser reredos was an altarpiece commissioned in 1382 by the military bishop of Norwich cathedral Hugh Despenser to celebrate his victory over the peasants in the Battle of North Walsham (Peasants' Revolt 1381) The five panels depict five stages of the passion of Christ : flagellation, procession, the crucifixion, burial and resurrection. Remarkably the art work was lost and hidden for many years from the 1600s to the Victorian age as a plumber's work table ! The retable is now on display in St Luke's chapel in Norwich cathedral.
