Oh, Antinous!

Honni felt drawn into this strange grove of olive and cypress trees. Stone and marble structures stood tall with strange statues all around. As the sun shifted and light streamed through the trees, ancient lyre music could be heard accompanied by a soft song. It told the tale of deep love between a young Grecian man and a Roman Emperor. A love story that evoked images of tender moments and deep desires. Suddenly, the joyous song turned somber as the lyrics told of Antinous’s death at the Nile, and the weeping of the Emperor Hadrian that flooded the Nile itself.

Honni was bewitched by the music, lost in their own head, as their body began to sway and ritualistic dance in ways they’d never done before. Soon the grove was filled with a hundred ghost ancestors of queer folk that had danced in this place, to this song, long before our adventurer had arrived.

As the last chorus came to an end, Honni joined their voice with that of the ghostly singer’s.

‘Ave, ave, Antinoe! Ave, vive, Antinoe’
