Bison in Winter

While in the Lamar Valley of Yellowstone, I came upon a small herd of American Bison making its way through deep snow. It was late in the afternoon and the sun seemed to make their heavy fur glow! Winters are terribly hard on bison and food is not very nutritious, especially when you consider an adult bison weighs about 2,000 pounds. Some of the herd had already made its way across this snow covered meadow and onto a wind blown hill, where the food was more easily accessible.
