At The Banks of Sugarland

Completing a mad dash from Liberty Point to US-27 like no other, SCFE’s Sebring Turn is seen one final time outside of Clewiston skirting along the banks of the Sugarland Canal, splitting the highway grade crossing on its approach into town. The engineer lets his power coast in idle over this stretch of trackage to take in a sharp 90° curve to the east right before entering Clewiston’s yard limits one mile down the line from this location. Once they arrive, the Turn’s will break down its train and put away their power by the North Shops, all in preparation to repeat their familiar charade the following day.

Despite having been in Florida for nearly two years, U.S. Sugar’s very first EMD SD40, #HLCX6341, a 1966-built [now rebuilt] former Southern Pacific SD40R, still sticks out like a sore thumb among the shortlines fleet of yellow and gray, sporting its lark grey and scarlet red nose paint job it received during the SP-DRGW merger in the mid-1990s. Throw said 40R out into a territory as exotic as south-central Florida’s sugar cane fields and anyone can see why it would be on anyone’s bucket list.

Paired with #USSC6323 [SD40-2], U.S. Sugar’s second rostered six-axle EMD, 6341 and its 15 car train complete the scene as viewed from the west bank of the Sugarland Canal on the final leg of their journey from Sebring. This location hosts what is arguably the most photogenic irrigation canal on SCFE’s system with how well the trackage, vegetation, topography and lighting work throughout a year. Although no alligators were spotted, the lush greenery, tranquil waters and clear sky bring the perfect blend of pristine sugarland scenery to the “falling action” of one of the best SCFE Sebring Turn chase’s I’ve done to date.
